Today is “International Day of Persons with Disabilities”, an international observance promoted by the United Nations.
It’s a day to celebrate diversity, and a reminder to us all of the importance of fostering inclusive environments where everyone can participate fully in society.
Colin Duthie, Chair of Disability Motorsport Scotland, explains, “We are all different. It’s not the disability that holds us back, it’s the environment and lack of understanding.
“Motorsport is quite rare in the fact that individuals can compete together regardless of impairment. There is so much technical support in terms of equipment and increased understanding within motorsport that disability is just another challenge to overcome, not a problem to fix.
“Disability Motorsport Scotland is doing its bit to support disabled individuals fulfil their dream of participating or completing in Motorsport. We’re changing gears and changing lives.”
Motorsport UK launches disability training module
Today, Motorsport UK is launching a disability training module, with a focus on supporting and promoting participation across motorsport.
The creation of this new module was encouraged by the involvement of the Motorsport UK Disability and Accessibility Expert Committee, who identified that more needs to be done by the governing body to encourage inclusivity across all motorsport disciplines.
Tony Compson, Chair of the Motorsport UK Disability and Accessibility Expert Committee, said, “Training is an effective way to widen the understanding of the issues surrounding the motorsport disabled community and to help remove some of the negative perceptions and actions that can often permeate through amongst those dealing with the disabled community within motorsport.”
