Scottish Classic Sports and Saloon Championship, Scottish Fiesta ST Championship

Sunday 9th July 2023, 09:00

Always a crowd pleaser, the Scottish Classic Sports and Saloon Championship brings some nostalgia to the Scottish Championship. In many cases this championship offers drivers the opportunity to race the cars that they grew up watching and envying, but it also provides an avenue for anyone – who enjoys a passion for classic cars – to get out on track and enjoy the sheer pleasure of hustling iconic cars of yesteryear around the undulating Knockhill racing circuit.

Both mass production-based cars and limited production cars can take part. The championship boasts 6 different classes which are mainly for cars manufactured up until 31st December 1989.  Additionally there is a seperate class for Ford Fiesta XR2 cars racing alongside the main championship cars and battling for the title of XR2 Champion.

Fiesta racing has been a mainstay of Scottish Motor Racing for over 20 years, initially with the XR2 model – which is still raced in our Classics Sports and Saloons Championship – and more recently with the Fiesta ST model.

The championship continues to offer incredibly close and hard racing at an affordable price point. The Fiesta ST race cars are powered by the standard but punchy 2 litre Duratec power unit which is found in the road going car. They run on the super grippy Toyo Proxes R888R tyre and are equipped with ABS brakes and 3-way adjustable dampers. This makes for a responsive but forgiving driving experience that inspires confidence in the driver to push further and further towards the limit.

For this reason, the championship attracts both seasoned veterans and newcomers alike. In the past, the Fiesta class has helped to launch the careers of some of Scotland’s top racing drivers (notably triple British Touring Car Champion, Gordon Shedden, started his motor racing career in the Fiesta championship) and today the championship still offers drivers a great apprenticeship in race craft and car control.
